The ancient Szirmay family first acquired land in Tolcsva in the 1680s. The estate was taken over by the Waldbotts at the end of the 19th century, when the castle was lent its current appearance. The central and southern parts were recently renovated. The rooms were returned to their original splendour, the boiler house was converted back into an orangery, and the gymnasium once again took on the role of a function room and dining hall. The chapel was also restored, and a kitchen exhibition room was constucted. The two most prestigious wooden-clad rooms of the castle are the men's salon and the connecting library. Outdoor performances are regularly held in the large park.
It has been a long-standing wish of the locals for the castle to be the comprehensively reconstructed.
